Black hole entropy and area

It is shown that in any model of black holes consisting of elementary constituents (some) distinguishability of the constituents is enough to reproduce the area law for the entropy and a maximum (Hagedorn) temperature. In Ashtekar's theory the spectrum of the elementary area excitations is identified and shown to correspond to a discrete energy quantum for the Hawking radiation.
